Historical Italian Martial Arts from 1997

SAAM is an Italian sports and cultural non-profit association born in 1996 with the aim to study and popularize italian martial arts of Middle Age and Renaissance, especially the ancient science of fighting with bladed weapons. It banned all forms of contamination with modern or eastern martial disciplines and artistic creativity on the part of its instructors: humbly it goes back to the texts of the ancient masters, discussing them and interpreting them to the best of its ability.

SAAM is currently the largest HEMA association of Italy, with more than 40 locations around the country, dozens of qualified instructors and over 600 martial students. The club is actively works for the spread of Italian and European ancient fencing, establishing contacts and ongoing collaborations with many Italian and foreign associations.

Florentia – The HEMAC event in Italy – 26/27/28 May 2016
HEMAC Florentia 2016 is a great HEMA event held in Italy. It will be hosted in the wonderful city of Florence, from May 27th to May 29th 2016, and it is brought to you by the organizing effort of Sala d’Arme Achille Marozzo.

HEMA and historical fencing


HEMA stands for Historical European Martial Arts and identifies the study and the practice of historical fencing and in general historical hand to hand combat, directly from historical sources, like treatises.

The practice of European martial arts have grown rapidly in the last decade, with many new groups establishing themselves, more and bigger events, more competitions and an increasing number of students. HEMA has featured on national TV networks, in national newspapers and in academic publications.
